2001 Funeral

2001 will go down in history as a bad year, a very bad year, one of the worst, in the electronics industry. The Texas region, particularly the Dallas/Fort Worth area, was especially hard-hit due to the absolute decimation that occured in the telecom business sector. The area that had been one of the hottest in the entire US in 2000 became one of layoffs, acquisitions, and bankruptcies just a few months later. No one, in any business, was left unaffected by the recession (and yes, we knew we were in a recession months before our friends in Washington decided to admit it!). The two young, professional electronic component sales reps in the following picture personify the frustration (but with a sense of humor!) all of us in the industry felt in 2001. Everyone was glad to see the year end and the calendar roll over to 2002. During an office conversation at PEI Intergalactic HQs sometime in mid-November 2001, an idea was born. Initially it got a smile or two, then a warmer reception when the thought was first suggested to put the lousy year to rest with a funeral, a real funeral. "Why not invite a distributor or two?" "Can I invite a few customers?" "I know some people that would love to participate in something like that!" "Let's bury this %^#*&%@# year!"

And thus, what began as a simple idea became a PARTY! And what a party it was!

The pages that follow contain some of the pictures we took at the 2001 funeral service, held in the courtyard at Intergalactic HQs on Tuesday evening, January 15, 2002. We are indebted to have some dear friends who volunteered to participate in the "service" and festivities: John Reas (Alcatel), Steve Lawler (Ericsson), Marc Zidell (Reptron), Jim Clark (Avnet/Kent) and Gayland Hewett (Amphenol Aerospace).
